Plantar warts, medically termed Verruca plantaris, are a common foot condition that can cause discomfort and inconvenience. At Choice Podiatry Center, we specialize in diagnosing and treating foot-related ailments, including plantar warts, to help our patients regain comfort and mobility.

What Are Plantar Warts?

Plantar warts are small, rough, grainy growths that appear on the soles of the feet, particularly in weight-bearing areas such as the heels or balls of the feet. They are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), which enters the skin through small cuts or abrasions. Plantar warts can sometimes form in clusters, known as mosaic warts.

Symptoms of Plantar Warts

Plantar warts can vary in appearance and severity. Common symptoms include:

  • A rough, grainy lesion on the bottom of the foot
  • Small black dots within the wart, which are actually tiny clotted blood vessels sometimes called "wart seeds"
  • Pain or tenderness when walking or standing, especially with pressure directly on the wart
  • Thickened or callused skin that forms over the wart due to pressure

Plantar warts are usually harmless, but those experiencing significant pain, or who have diabetes or a compromised immune system, should seek prompt medical care rather than waiting.

How Do Plantar Warts Spread?

HPV thrives in warm, moist environments such as locker rooms, swimming pools, and communal showers. Walking barefoot in these areas increases the risk of exposure. The virus spreads through direct contact, either from person to person or by touching a contaminated surface, and can enter the skin through even small cuts or breaks.

Treatment Options for Plantar Warts

While some plantar warts resolve on their own, they can be persistent and painful. Treatment options include:

  • SWIFT Therapy — a cutting-edge, non-invasive treatment that uses microwave technology to target and eliminate the wart at its root by stimulating the body's natural immune response. It requires no downtime, making it an excellent option for many patients.
  • Cryotherapy — freezing the wart with liquid nitrogen to destroy the infected tissue.
  • Over-the-counter treatments — salicylic acid-based products can help dissolve the wart gradually over time.
  • In-office procedures — including debridement, electric tool removal, or laser treatment, performed by a podiatrist for more resistant warts.

Plantar warts are diagnosed by examining the lesion, sometimes with a small scraping of the rough skin to confirm the diagnosis.

Preventing Plantar Warts

  • Wear shoes or sandals in public showers, pools, and locker rooms
  • Keep your feet clean and dry
  • Avoid direct contact with warts, including your own — do not pick at or rub existing warts
  • Do not share socks, shoes, or foot care tools with others
